Exhibition kits
I had a new idea for this project today, thought I'd try writing it down here, and think through it.
The idea would be to create "exhibition kits" for each of the projects, either before or after the actual exhibtion. Each kit would consist of A4 sized sheets in black and white, of images, text, etc to correspond to the project. For example, for Accumulation #1, there would be images of all the company logos, the quotes, the portraits, and other prints in the show here in Venice.
These kits would come with a statement, wall labels, and instructions and possibilities for hanging. The recevier of this kit would then photocopy the items, and curate the show as they see fit. (this also raises the possiblity of someone with access to free photocopying to make piles of photocopies...) So, that person could set up a show in their house, or paste them up around town- they could diplay it however them wish, with the only stipulation being that the person must send images of the works in situ.
Kits could be sent out in the mail, or sent as a series of pdf's. This project appeals to me in that the graphic nature of the work lends itself to a simple production value, and as a way to get work out there without relying too heavily on galleries, residencies, etc.
Other ideas to think about:
- breaking down images in a grid, so they can be displayed large
- using this before and after the "official" projects to rethink ideas
- including actions or found object sculptures (re: piles, collections) as part of and installation.
- should be done in a way that wouldn't destroy someone's house- using tape, etc
If anyone has suggestions, send them along. Also, if anyone thinks they would be interested in a kit, email me or post here on the blog.

hi louis. i think you need to close your system. it feels to open for laissez-faire suggestions. i like some of your ideas, but who is defining your decisions? everything seems so loose -too loose, frankly. if you want our help, limit us and direct us. too many "woulds, coulds, shoulds".
the kits idea seems pretty thin right now.
moving on... i like the show you've put up even though i can't really see any of the images. it seems very italian -there is a lot of careful and stylish exhibition.
here's an idea: make your "blog" into something different than what it is now. it is becoming more of a rambling journal of images and posed questions that seem more intended for you to answer than us.
as for your kit idea -check out this guy's project and then look at some of his other ones:

ciao
Some interesting ideas there Smarty, and a bit of bullshit. Let's see if we can sift through this...
I had intended this as a place to work though these ideas, ones that are honestly quite vague at this point, and then as I worked though ideas, I would get a stronger project and thus a stronger blog. This was not intended as documentation of finished work- I would have made a regular website had this been a closed system.
That said, you're right, it does feel too loose- I would like to read more blogs as examples, to see if/how other artists have used this, perhaps you have an example or two? Or maybe this kind of thing just doesn't work in this time- with the amount of info out there, perhaps everything needs to clearcut and to the point, account for the fact that even the most voracious reader, art viewer, etc has a very short attention span.
Then again, why give in to lazy viewers? I guess this was part of the idea of this project, to attempt to narrow the focus a bit- work from the last few years was purposely resistant to a simple definition, to the point of being too loose. Of course, it was easy to avoid question about this, so I thought a blog might help me here- so even if I sound prickly, I appreciate the comments.
Other thoughts-
- The kits probably are not appropriate for this project, though i like the idea of making others part of the work, and part producers- it doesn't seem to fit well conceptually with the rest of the work.
- I have no idea what you mean by "very italian, careful, stylish"- because everything's hung at right angles? the constasting colors?
- Thanks for the Lee Walton link- the city systems project is interesting, but I don't think I should look at that site in order to narrow my focus...
- And, there's still the matter of your identity, Smarty. I don't think I really want it, it was usually difficult to take suggestions from other artists seriously when I knew their work had similar problems- I think I like the quasi-authoritive tone you have and that I can only deal with what you've written.
louis. it's nice to parlez here even though i'm already losing track of what we're saying to each other (a casualty of blogging?). perhaps it's a waste of time to go on and on about what a blog is and what it/they should be or could be. after all, it is, simply, what you've made it.
my identity, like yours, is nothing to be concerned with. does it matter to you that at this moment it is raining outside my window?
so, I just took a break to go back and look at some of your past postings, images, and reread the project proposal. ultimately, it was just frustrating. the basic idea and metaphor for piles and the ideas surrounding accumulation is interesting, but i found it difficult to connect the projects one to another.
in the first koch project you mention something about "moments of dishonesty and hoarding". this was the only specific reference to something beyond a simple investigation of piles. this had something that interested me that went beyond the kochs and into something more universally connected, and ultimately more important.
why is this project so massive? how did these projects come about and why are they connected? i mean, beyond piles? and isn't this limiting anyways? it occurs to me that you might miss out on something more important. if you slowed it all down perhaps it would be less confusing and more "closed"
-sj
ps i took the acid drawings of piles from one your the posts and put them on my coputer. they're nice to look at -thanks.
Thanks for the ideas, I addressed them in the next post. I only wanted to note the "my identity, like yours, is nothing to be concerned with" comment, I don't know many hippies so you are really narrowing it down.
Whatever, just don't start telling me how this blog could be a speck of dust in some giant's fingernail. Blegh.
